Lifelong Learning
What is Lifelong Learning? Lifelong Learning is 1 of 9 programs Lifelong offers to older adults in the community. Lifelong Learning started in the spring of 1998 and offers volunteer-taught community classes which focus on sharing knowledge and linking communities with one another. In 1998 the program began with 15 classes and 139 people participating. The program now offers over 150 classes each year with over 500 people participating. Registration Process To register for a class listed, please submit a completed registration form and return it with any fees to Lifelong by mail or in person. Class sizes are limited, so early registration is encouraged. All registrations are processed in the order in which they are received. After registering, participants will receive a confirmation letter by mail which confirms their status as enrolled or wait-listed. If you pre-register for a class and fail to attend the first session without notifying the office, your seat may be given to someone else. Class Evaluations Lifelong evaluates all the classes on a regular basis and welcomes your feedback. Evaluation forms are available for you to share your experience and voice your input. You can pick up an evaluation form in the front office or download a copy from our website. Cancellation Policy Lifelong reserves the right to cancel programs for lack of enrollment or other unforeseeable circumstances. If a class is canceled or rescheduled we will make our best attempt to notify you well in advance. Inclement or Severe Weather Policy Our facilities will be closed when the Ithaca City School District is closed because of inclement weather conditions. Tune into WHCU News Talk 870AM radio for announcements. Assistance & Accommodation Lifelong seeks to provide program accessibility for people of all abilities. If you have questions or need accommodation during your participation in a class or activity, please notify a staff person when you register. Membership Although membership in Lifelong is not required, we encourage everyone to join. Yearly membership contributions help support our programs and help cover the financial cost. Membership dues for the 2010 calendar year are $20.00 for an individual and $30.00 for a household. The new Contributing Member Level of $180 additionally includes 1 Lifelong Learning Semester Registration per year ($75 value) and $100 of the membership is a tax deductible gift. Members receive a $5 discount on their total registration cost for courses offered by Lifelong Learning and receive a $5 discount on all trips. Fees & Expenses No one will ever be denied participation because of an inability to pay the registration fees associated with Lifelong Learning. Need-based scholarships are available for anyone who is unable to afford the cost of registration (see registration form on pages 16-19).
When registering in person, please do so between 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. at the front desk. Additional material fees are noted and due at the time of registering. The materials fee is non-refundable, unless you cancel 2 weeks prior to the class. As of July 1, 2009, a $5.00 administrative fee will be charged for any refund requests due to cancellations by participants. Parking It is the policy of Lifelong that everyone must park legally and safely and refrain from parking in either front or back lots while running errands and not attending a current program at Lifelong. Limited parking is available for participants on a first-come, first-served basis. We encourage everyone to walk, ride a bike, carpool, or take public transportation whenever possible. There is a bicycle rack located on the east-side of the building. Also, note that our rear parking lot from Buffalo Street is shared with the Wellness Center. The two rows of parking spaces closest to our brick building are Lifelong’s. If you park in any other space, your vehicle may be towed at your expense. Metered parking is also available on West Court and Buffalo Streets. There are non-metered spots on Geneva Street, Cascadilla Street, Farm Street, & Plain Street. Volunteer Opportunities Lifelong Learning is made possible by the time and energy generously donated by volunteer instructors who come from diverse backgrounds. Program ideas and new volunteer instructors are always welcome. If you’re interested in teaching a class during our next semester, Fall 2010, please send a class description and your biographical statement to Jillian Pendleton at jpendleton@tclifelong.org or call (607) 273-1511.
